Greenock-based SNP MSP Stuart McMillan is raising attention of Debt Awareness Week next week – and he has encouraged any of his constituents who may be struggling with their energy bills to get in touch with Scottish Gas Energy Trust for some extra assistance.
The Scottish Gas Energy Trust is an independent charitable trust established 10 years ago to help those people who are most in need. Since 2004, Scottish and British Gas has provided the Trust with over £85m and assistance to 175,000 people who are struggling with their bills.
Stuart McMillan MSP said:
“Over the years, the Scottish Gas Energy Trust has made a huge difference. Since 2004 it has provided over 59,700 with grants worth over £53,500,000.
“The Trust provides grants to help with energy arrears and also funds advisers in four locations across Scotland who provide face to face advice and support. This help is open to everyone, not just Scottish Gas customers.
“With Debt Awareness Week taking place next week, it’s important to highlight awareness of the support available through the Scottish Gas Energy Trust, especially for any of my constituents who might be struggling with winter energy bills.”
Other ways Scottish Gas Energy can help
Support for the Trust is only one of the ways we help. do more than any other supplier to help those who are struggling with their energy bills – and are continually looking at new ways we can support those in need:
- Scottish Gas have teams of dedicated advisers who proactively call customers who are having difficulties in paying their bills to see if they can help.
- As well as putting customers in touch with the Trust, Scottish Gas also look to offer manageable debt repayment plans and refer to StepChange Debt Charity for wider financial support.
- We help our customers use less energy by installing home energy efficiency measures: over the past five years we’ve helped over 3.5m households in this way.
- We have one of the widest eligibility criteria in the industry for providing the Warm Home Discount and expect to help almost 700,000 customers during this winter.
